The History of the American Red Cross
They started their organization in 1940 and provide about 40% of the nation’s blood supply. Their mission statement is “preventing and alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies.” They work very hard to expand their networks of humans helping humans through volunteering, donating, and educating.
The American Red Cross is an inspiring organization to be involved with. The volunteers that seek opportunities to work with them are selflessly donating their time, money, blood, and other resources. There are so many ways to help those in need through this organization.
Donating Blood
Donating blood literally saves lives, and one donation has the potential to help more than one patient. This is one of the easiest ways of helping others. While there are some eligibility requirements, they welcome all help with open arms. Every 2 seconds, someone in the US is in need of a blood donation, and since blood can’t be manufactured, the only way those in need will get it is through generous donors.
Unable to Donate
There are other ways to help provide support to the American Red Cross apart from donating. Consider hosting a blood drive or finding a company who would like to host one. Pulling together promotions to help support local donor centers, mobile blood drives coming to your area, or companies who want to host for them are great ways to get involved.
What Else You Can Do
From volunteering in times of need to assisting with fundraisers, there are many opportunities for help. In fact, 90% of the workforce that supports the American Red Cross are volunteers!
There are volunteer services that range from making phone calls to thank donors, to assisting with disaster relief for victims of natural disasters.
So, if you’re looking for a simple way to be more involved in your community and to help others, a great place to start would be at a local American Red Cross. Seek out an opportunity that best fits you and what you want to be a part of.
